Activewear between Material Innovation and Performative Design: Ferrari Fashion School Collaborates with Norman Group

Ferrari Fashion School has completed an academic collaboration with Norman Group, an Italian leader in technical materials for sustainable sportswear, involving first-year students from the Fashion Design undergraduate program in the development of women’s capsule collections inspired by the world of sport and activewear, under the supervision of designer Anna Molteni.
This educational project focused on stylistic research, functionality, and high-performance materials, turning the classroom into a true multidisciplinary design lab.

Activewear: A Growing Market and Design Opportunity

The global activewear market is projected to exceed €381 billion by 2025, with steady growth expected to reach nearly €625 billion by 2033, marking an average annual growth rate of 5%.
According to Fortune Business Insights, the sportswear sector will grow from approximately €298 billion in 2025 to around €563 billion by 2032, driven by the rising demand for functional fashion, athleisure apparel, and high-performance technical garments.
This ongoing expansion creates new opportunities for designers, emerging brands, and fashion companies operating within the evolving segments of activewear and lifestyle sportswear.

Capsule Collections: Sportswear, Accessories, and Brand Identity

Each student team developed a 10-look capsule collection with soft accessories, starting from an assigned total-look brand and sport, analyzing visual codes, technical needs, and Norman Group’s performance materials.
The goal: to create hybrid garments blending urban aesthetics and functionality, in line with contemporary athleisure and activewear trends.

Material Innovation: High-Tech and Sustainable Fabrics

Norman Group supplied technical materials such as windproof softshells, breathable and water-repellent fabrics, combined with stretch nylon and thermoregulatory yarns.
Working with these advanced textiles allowed students to design garments with a strong integration of function and design, reflecting the global activewear landscape, where innovation and performance are key market drivers.
The project culminated in a final presentation, showcasing the dialogue between creativity, feasibility, and industrial potential.

Activewear, Education, and Future Perspectives

At a time when activewear dominates contemporary fashion — with brands like Nike, Adidas, and Lululemon (which recently opened its first stores in Milan) leading a rapidly expanding market — Ferrari Fashion School and Norman Group have built a cutting-edge educational pathway.
The project not only prepares young designers to face the challenges of the sector but also helps redefine the design of technical womenswear, merging aesthetics, performance, and responsible storytelling.
