From July 20 to 24, Ferrari Fashion School hosted the Summer Programme in Performance Art for Fashion in Milan, an intensive course dedicated to exploring the dialogue between performance art, fashion, and contemporary creative practices. Led by internationally renowned performance artist Marta Jovanović, Coordinator of the Visual Arts Department at RUFA, the programme offered an immersive educational experience combining artistic research, experimentation, and performative practice.
Designed to explore the relationship between the body, clothing, and identity, the Summer Programme transformed the city of Milan into a creative laboratory, giving participants the opportunity to engage with new forms of expression while discovering some of the city’s leading institutions for contemporary art and fashion.
A Journey Through Contemporary Art and Fashion
Throughout the week, the programme combined lectures, workshops, practical exercises, and creative sessions focused on the development of performative outfits and site-specific actions. At the heart of the experience was the idea of the body as a creative language and clothing as a powerful medium for expressing stories, identities, and emotions through performance.
The experience was enriched by a series of visits to some of Milan’s most significant cultural and artistic landmarks, including Palazzo Morando, The Last Supper, Pirelli HangarBicocca, the exhibition Le Alchimiste at Palazzo Reale, and Armani/Silos. This itinerary offered participants new perspectives on the relationship between art, fashion, history, and contemporary research.
Guided by Marta Jovanović
The Summer Programme was led by Marta Jovanović, an internationally acclaimed performance artist and educator whose work has played a significant role in advancing the discipline of performance art. Founder of the Performance Art Program at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, she was an Artist in Residence at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles and is the subject of the award-winning documentary Born Just Now, directed by Robert Adanto.
Her artistic practice, which explores the body as a space for research, memory, and transformation, guided participants throughout the development of performative projects that combined artistic experimentation with the language of fashion.
The Final Performance
The Summer Programme concluded with the presentation of a collective performance, marking the culmination of the week’s creative journey and providing an opportunity to share the work developed throughout the programme.
The performance brought together the participants’ individual and collective research, transforming movement, presence, garments, and spatial interaction into a powerful form of contemporary storytelling. The final presentation demonstrated how performance art can expand the expressive possibilities of fashion, creating meaningful connections between creativity, design, and artistic research.
