Course Structure

The Basic Tailoring course in Milan takes place in a workshop-based learning environment, combining practical demonstrations by the instructor with individual hands-on exercises. From the very first lesson, students work with needle, thread, and sewing machines, learning how to construct simple garments, attach buttons, zips, and elastic bands, correct tailoring defects, and customise clothing pieces.

The programme also includes basic pattern-making skills, enabling students to create simple paper patterns and experiment with upcycling techniques, transforming old garments into unique and creative pieces. At the end of the course, a certificate of attendance is issued (minimum 8 out of 10 lessons attended), valid for the recognition of 2 CFA credits.

Programme

  • Lesson 1: Introduction to tailoring, professional tools, basics of hand sewing, and introduction to the sewing machine
  • Lesson 2: Basic hand stitches and simple machine sewing techniques
  • Lesson 3: Materials and fabric behaviour, including cutting layout and fabric positioning techniques
  • Lesson 4: Accessories: buttons, zips, and elastic bands—how to replace or apply them
  • Lesson 5: Introduction to pattern making, taking measurements, and creating a basic pattern for a skirt or T-shirt (to be agreed with the tutor)
  • Lesson 6: How to adjust or modify an existing pattern
  • Lesson 7: Hems and finishing techniques, and how to alter or correct garments (enlarging or reducing sizes)
  • Lesson 8: Personal project development: garment alteration using upcycling techniques or creation of a simple garment (at the participant’s discretion)
  • Lesson 9: Continued development of the personal upcycling project
  • Lesson 10: Final presentation and evaluation of the project with the presence of a tailoring expert

The Basic Tailoring course is designed for beginners and fashion enthusiasts who want to learn the fundamentals of sewing and tailoring. It is ideal as a beginner sewing course in Milan for those starting their journey in fashion design and garment making.

Students learn hand and machine sewing techniques, garment construction, basic pattern making, and how to alter and repair existing clothing. The course also introduces fundamental principles of upcycling and sustainable garment transformation.
